Berry Picking

Berry picking is a fun outdoor activity the entire family can enjoy. Often towards the end of summer when berries start to ripen their are tons of wild berry locations near popular campgrounds and waterways. There are also tons of local berry farms that allow you to fill your own bucket with as many as you can haul.

Taking some time out to pick berries can be a delicious and nutritious activity. When picking berries you’ll definitely need to bring a bucket. If you’ve got a few kids going with you you’ll want to bring a bucket for each of them. You’ll want to know when berries are in season before you head out. Since weather plays a major part in when the berries are ripe you should check with local growers to determine the approximate time they will be ready for picking.

Out of all of the u-pick berry farms I’d say that Strawberries and Blueberries are the most popular. Some of the most common berry types are strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries.  Strawberries are usually one of the first berries to ripen and can be ready as early as April. Many berries start to ripen in the middle of summer. Some fruit like Raspberries usually have two harvests a year. Blackberries are another middle of the summer harvest. Blueberries on the other hand mature a little later in the season like around October depending on the weather.

When berry picking you’ll want to select only the nice plump ripe berries to take home, especially since berries don’t ripen off the vine. You should also watch out to avoid picking over-ripe berries which will spoil faster. The best berries to pick are ones that are just ripe and full of juicy flavor. After you’ve picked all you want there’s a wide variety of things you can use them for. For instance there’s eating them plain, or adding them to desserts, or smoothies. You can also use them to make delicious jams. If you want to save them for later you can freeze them to keep them fresh until you’re ready to use them.

Berry picking is an outdoor activity that’s fun for the entire family. Just remember to watch the brambles, wear sun screen, and wash off your finds before eating.
